Lore Terms of Service

Last updated: 21 July 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of Lore ("Lore", "we"), the operator of the Lore service. By creating an account or using Lore, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

We wrote these terms to be readable. Where the law requires precise language, we use it, but nothing here is designed to trick you.

1. What Lore is

Lore is a private, writing-first place to record your life and share it with the people who matter to you. You write entries, share them to circles you choose, send letters to individual people, and keep a personal archive.

Lore has no public feeds, no follower counts, and no engagement metrics. What you write is visible only to the people you explicitly share it with, unless you create a share link for a specific entry.

2. Your account

To use Lore you need an account with accurate information and a working email address. You are responsible for keeping your credentials safe and for activity that happens under your account. Contact us if you believe someone else has accessed it.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Lore. If you are under 18, make sure a parent or guardian is comfortable with you using it.

One person, one account. Do not create accounts for other people or automate account creation.

3. Your content

You own everything you write and upload. Lore claims no ownership of your entries, photos, videos, or letters.

You grant us a limited licence to store, process, and transmit your content, solely to run the service for you. This covers things like storing your entries, delivering them to the circles you chose, transcoding video for playback, generating features you request such as recaps or printed books, and making backups. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to the deletion timelines in section 9 and our backup cycles.

We never sell your content, use it for advertising, or show it to anyone you did not share it with.

Sharing is yours to control. Content is visible only to the circles and people you select. A share link grants access to the specific entries you chose to include, nothing more. You can revoke a share link at any time. Be aware that people you share with can read, save, or copy what you shared, so share with people you trust.

4. Acceptable use

Lore is for real people writing about their lives. Do not use it to:

  • break the law or help someone else break it
  • harass, threaten, or defame others
  • post content that sexualises minors, in any form. We remove such content and report it to authorities
  • upload malware or attempt to breach, probe, or overload our systems
  • scrape the service or access it by automated means without our written permission
  • impersonate another person
  • resell or commercially exploit the service

Because Lore is private by design, we do not read your content proactively. We act on reports, legal obligations, and automated safety signals required by law. If content or behaviour violates these terms, we may remove the content, restrict features, or suspend the account, proportionate to the violation. Where reasonable, we will notify you and give you a chance to respond.

5. Free and premium tiers

The free tier includes unlimited writing, circles, letters, reading, reactions, and replies; 1 GB of media storage; a basic “on this day” throwback from your archive; full export of your data; and up to 5 AI writing assists per calendar month. Members, circles, and reading are never limited on any tier.

The premium tier is a writing companion and deeper memory for the person the archive belongs to. It includes 50 GB of media storage, a fuller AI companion (improve, teach, suggest) under a monthly assist budget, year in review, advanced throwbacks, and optional podcast generation from your writing. Current pricing is shown at checkout.

Videos are optimized in the app to about 720p quality before upload so storage stays efficient. A server-side priority transcode queue may be offered later for premium members.

If you downgrade or stop paying, we never delete your existing content. Your archive stays intact and readable. You may be unable to upload new media beyond the free storage allowance until you free up space or upgrade again.

We may adjust tier limits over time. If we materially reduce what your paid tier includes, we will tell you at least 30 days in advance and you can cancel before the change applies.

6. Payments and cancellation

Subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. Prices include VAT where applicable. You can cancel at any time from your account settings or the Stripe customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and we do not charge you after that.

Right of withdrawal. If you are a consumer in the EU or EEA, you have a 14-day right to withdraw from a subscription purchase without giving a reason. By starting your subscription immediately, you consent to the service beginning during the withdrawal period. If you withdraw within 14 days, we refund you, less a proportionate amount for the days already used. To withdraw, contact us through the app or the support channel listed on the site.

If a payment fails, we will retry and notify you. Your account reverts to the free tier if payment cannot be collected. Your content is not deleted.

7. AI features

Some features use AI to assist your writing — for example taste notes, improvements, craft lessons, and prompts. These features run only when you use them. Free accounts receive a hard monthly cap of 5 assists; premium accounts receive a higher monthly budget shown in settings. AI output can be wrong or odd, so treat it as a draft aid, not a source of truth. Your content is not used to train AI models.

8. Privacy

How we handle personal data is described in the Privacy Policy, which is a separate document. In short: we collect what the service needs, your writing stays with the people you share it with, and we do not sell your data or use it for ads.

9. Leaving, exporting, and deletion

Export. You can export your data from settings at any time at no cost: an instant JSON download, and a full zip archive that includes your media files when ready.

Deletion. You can delete your account from profile settings. Because deletion is permanent and your archive may span years, the flow asks you to confirm deliberately and shows you what will be lost. After confirmation there is a grace period of 30 days during which you can change your mind and restore the account. After the grace period, your account and content are permanently deleted from our systems, with residual copies in backups removed within 90 days.

Content you shared into someone else's circle context, such as replies in a shared thread, may be removed or anonymised depending on the setting. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

10. Service changes and availability

Lore is run by a small operation and provided with care, but we cannot promise uninterrupted availability. We may change, add, or retire features. If we ever decide to shut Lore down, we will give you at least 90 days notice and keep export available for that entire period. Your archive will not vanish without warning.

11. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under law, including liability for intent or gross negligence, or your statutory rights as a consumer under Finnish and EU consumer protection law.

Otherwise, the service is provided as is. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages, loss of profits, or loss of data beyond what our own negligence caused, and our total liability toward you is limited to the amounts you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. You are responsible for keeping copies of content that is irreplaceable to you, and the export tool exists so you always can.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service and the law evolve. For material changes we will notify you by email or in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. If you do not accept the new terms, you can export your data and delete your account before they apply. Continued use after the effective date means acceptance.

13. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Finland. Disputes are resolved in the district court of Helsinki, Finland. If you are a consumer, you retain the right to bring proceedings in your country of residence and to any protection its mandatory consumer laws grant you.

If you are a consumer in Finland, you can also refer a dispute to the Consumer Disputes Board (kuluttajariita.fi) after contacting the Consumer Advisory Services (kkv.fi). EU consumers can use the online dispute resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/odr.

Before any formal process, contact us. Most problems are fixable by talking.
